Offshore Projects: Portfolio Management System for a Bank

Motivation : A large Swiss Bank with IT budgets in billions of Swiss Francs wanted an effective system to manage their portfolio – One that can enable the top management to take informed decisions.

Solution : We carefully examined the information collected by the management consultant and mapped out a plan for the technical solution. Once this was approved, Ramsoft pulled in a domain expert from Canada and a project manager from India, and permanently placed them at the client’s location to handle all interactions. In parallel, a team of 14 members was built in Bangalore, India, including a project leader who made frequent visits to the client’s location and interfaced between the project manager and the team in India.

Implementation : The application comprises of a web-based tool for collecting, disseminating, and monitoring information on the portfolio of IT projects and initiatives (over 1500 at any time) at the enterprise level. The application is resident in the Bank’s headquarters in Zurich and has a prospective user base of nearly 1000 users located across the globe. These users would access the system over the Bank’s worldwide intranet. The application provides interfaces for collecting information from project management tools used at the enterprise level..
The technologies and platforms utilized include VB, ASP, COM, JavaScript, and Oracle. The development conformed to the bank’s strict standards for coding, security, and documentation. The project was a success as it was delivered in a telescoped manner over a 7-month period. The client’s deadlines were critical and Ramsoft succeeded in meeting the client’s expectations. A distributed team delivered the project – located in three continents – with a domain specialist from Canada, a project management team in Zurich, and the development team in India. The work was well appreciated by the client’s senior management.
